Ichi is a simplistic and cute one button puzzle game developed by Stolen Couch Games available for Android, iOS, and Steam!
I know you saw that featured image and it is no joke: Ichi currently has over 90,000 levels. Yeah, talk about getting the most bang for your buck. The level designs are really well thought out and created in a way that prevents you from blasting through the first third of the game without failing or having to pause and plan out your moves first. When you come across a new mechanic, it teaches you how to use it (as a good senpai should) and it doesn’t shove it down your throat every level.
For instance, you are immediately introduced to the red rotating triangle, so you think oh this is going to be the core mechanic of the game. Well surprise, the core mechanic is simply a one button puzzle game that includes many different mechanics you have manage simultaneously. What this means is that not every single mechanic will constantly be in use and there is one in particular that you actually have to make an effort to remember: holding down to draw a line. I’ve gotten stumped on quite a few levels early on because the frequency in which that particular mechanic is used is spread out so perfectly that I tend to forget it exists until I see the path I want, which doesn’t exist yet.
As I mentioned before, it is a cute game where everything is like a little doodle and has nice, bright colors along with lots of calming blue and white space that hopefully keeps players from raging and breaking some devices. Ichi also has a lot of symmetry but more so almost symmetrical levels but they’re all simplistic, which pleases me. The music is pretty dang good too. Not exactly what I expected for a puzzle game, but it is upbeat and I can honestly just listen to it. In the grand scheme of things, I’m not sure it fits in all that well but at least it wasn’t just devoid of any music or worse, some generic instrumental Asian music.
This is a great game to have if you’re taking a break at work, on the toilet, or on the plane. You can even have a contest with your friends to see who got the furthest and with the most A rank finishes. I mean come on, there are over 90,000 levels. What else can you get 90,000 of with $5? Maybe a bag of rice and you can play this while eating said rice. Did I mention you can also create your own levels? Haven’t tried it yet but I’m willing to bet it’s pretty entertaining. Just don’t get too carried away now.
