Trial by Viking is created by Dustin, a one man team from Last Life Games, who created this game through his passion for gaming. Dustin was inspired to do a game about Viking from the TV show Vikings on the history channel. It took him a little over 2 years and the game looks amazing. You can get it now on Steam. You can tell Dustin took time with his level creation because of the detail that he puts into it and the level design is dynamic. The game reminds me of Castlevania.
The game is a platformer with elements of puzzle solving. The gameplay is fun as there are melee and range weapons at your disposal, so there are multiple ways to kill your enemies. One of my favorite feature is that if you hold UP it unveils the map so you can see what area you have missed and the available paths to get to your finish line.
There are multiple weapons to use so it won’t get boring. For example, there are bombs to blow up obstacles to uncover secrets and hooks to get you pass certain stages. Certain areas have an enemy spawn point and they will continue to spawn over and over and over. This could be a good thing if you like the challenge.
I can see this game being very rewarding once you learn how use the dash to your advantage. Dash will make you invulnerable for the duration of the dash. Some people may understand this better as i-frame (invincibility frame). So if you learn the enemy attack pattern and know when to dash, you can basically never take damage.
The game caters to both casual and hardcore gamer. You can rush through the game and not worry about getting stones but will still be able to beat the game. You just have less upgrade compare to someone who retry level to pick up all stones to upgrade. This also will make the game easier due to higher upgrade of weapons and other tools at your disposal.
Overall Trial by Viking is an enjoyable platform game. My suggestion is that it could have tutorial mode to help players who are very casual or those who are new to playing game in general. Also more choices to bind action would be great such as double tab forward to dash.
