The first and second episode are currently on Steam and the Humble Store. The season pass costs $14.99 but once the final episode is released the price will increase to $20.00. You cannot buy episodes individually. Third episode will be released in Spring 2016. The game will eventually be released on tablets, PS4, Xbox and Wii U.
This game is a murder mystery decision-based story game that is set in Florida. The biggest selling point of this game is in its set design setting. Similar to theatrical plays, buildings are shifted and furniture is moved to change the scene of the act. The setting is inspired by Florida tourist trap locations- a place ripe for a murder mystery.
There are three playable characters: cheeky blogger Romana, down and out reporter Jack Bellet, and cynical private investigator K.C. Gaddis. Each character investigates the murder for their own reasons but their lives will eventually intertwine. Your goal is to unravel the murder mystery and each decision you make will affect the ending. Once you find a clue, will you take it to the press and let the gossip spread or keep it to yourself and wait for the right moment to reveal it? Play to your style because there is no wrong decision. Our new writer, PinkRobot is currently playing through the game- look forward to our full length review!
Q. What inspired you guys to create Knee Deep?
A. I saw that there was a great host of games out there and that people enjoy a good drama. I was inspired from the awesome stories from Kentucky Root Zero and from Telltale games. We got a writer that wrote out the story in a murder mystery fashion set in a Florida tourist trap. Then we found more people that was interested in this concept and soon enough, we started working on Knee Deep.
Q. What makes you different from all the other Story games out there?
A. There are more “tongue in cheek” dialogue but the stage presentation is what makes us unique. We are not reinventing the world but we are taking the formula and pushing it in a new direction through this theatrical theme. It is possible to do certain time jumps with a stage setting that normally wouldn’t flow.
Q. There are some concerns about the graphics of the character models…Are there plans to improve?
A. Well there is a huge improve between the first and second episode. The first episode didn’t have voice overs and we decided to add it in the second episode because we listened to the feedback and heard that so many people wanted it. In addition, we have also taken steps to upgrade the character models. The third episode will showcase even more improvements to the game!
Q. Any planned sequels for Knee Deep once the final episode is released?
No, no planned sequels. We plan to move into a different space and away from the theatre setting (even though we really loved it).
Q. What is one thing you would say to people who are wondering whether to play your game or not?
Embrace the story and the character you want to portray. Don’t think too much about the decisions, just do what you like and the story will progress. You can’t “lose” in this game. Play this game if you’re looking for a great story.
Q. How long does it take to play each episode?
A. 1-2 hours.
Q. Who is your favourite character?
A. Romana. She’s tough and really defensive. She is definitely not a one dimensional character.
Q. Which is your favourite episode?
A.Episode 2 even more theatrical vibes but Ep3 will have the biggest wtf moment. If someone actually predicts the ending I will give them a cookie!
