The Expendabros is a fast paced single-player/local co-op action game developed by Free Lives and published by Devolver Digital. The Expendabros is available on PC for free on Steam! It is an official crossover game from Brofroce. It offers full controller support and I highly recommend using controllers.
The cast of playable characters comes from The Expendables 3 and you must rescue your brothers in arms as you chase down Conrad Stonebanks who is an arms dealer. Each soldier has their own set of weapons and special attacks, so there’s never a shortage of variety (Bro Christmas is easily my favorite, followed closely by Bro Caesar). The biggest downside is that whenever you save someone, you become them and it is completely random. If there is a way to switch characters, I have yet to figure it out. Regardless, each character was immensely fun to play and offered a different approach to each situation but ultimately still resulted in more or less of a run and gun tactic.
The controls are very tight and responsive, which is required for the pace. I also wish I was able to at least aim upwards or in any direction other than forward. Since I couldn’t, I ended up just shooting through the ground in front of me and watched people fall to their deaths more often than I’d like to admit. The special attacks are truly something to behold: air strikes, a volley of daggers, and the good ol’ ground smash to name a few.
Graphics are pixel art style and look fan-freaking-tastic. The explosions look and feel immense and the blood splatter is glorious, even when it’s yours. To add to that, the environment is destructible and boy is it satisfying to just annihilate everything in your path. The only downside is that there is no music aside from boss fights, and even then it’s sub-par at best. But hey, at least you get to play to your own soundtrack.
Difficulty: Easy (Not sure how it would be with co-op. Could be more hectic.)
- Gameplay Score: 5/5 (Feels very responsive and extremely satisfying.)
- Graphics Score: 5/5 (Simple, but effective.)
- Music Score: 1/5 (At least there’s music at the intro and boss fights. Everything else was just sound effects but those were great in their own right.)
