The Bug Butcher is a fast paced shoot ’em up game developed and published by Awfully Nice Studios and can be purchased here on Steam. I’ll say that the first thing I thought of when I began play was how similar it was to this bubble popping game I used to play back in grade school. There’s even a local co-op mode as well! Gotta say, it is awfully nice to see one of my favorite childhood games again, but in such a new and refreshing way. The inspiration came from Super Pang which is basically the same thing as the other one, but feels a lot slower. The Bug Butcher, however, looks and feels like a million bucks. I would also strongly suggest using a controller.
The concept is simple: kill the bugs before they squish you. They call them bugs but the some of the enemies are pretty darn cute if you ask me. If they lose the spikes, cuddly even. I’m not sure what the problem is here honestly. Those ceiling spiders, on the other hand, can shoot themselves; even the NPC shares the same sentiment and fear of spiders. The Bug Butcher is a 2D side-scrolling game and you can get overwhelmed pretty easily so managing your power-ups is crucial. You have a button that allows you to dash and as you build up your combo, you get access to a special attack which you can unlock a variety of through playing the game. Alongside that, your little scientist buddy is able to generate weapon crates for you to give you a little boost once in a while. I’ll admit, sometimes he picks the worst possible choices at times but at least he tried…I think.
Levels will eventually start having little obstacles, barriers, and traps strewn about and it can get pretty hectic fairly quickly but it’s all about precision and accuracy here folks. Learn to lead your shots and keep an eye on those freaking spiders cause if they take out your buddy, you are pretty much screwed (or at least in for one hell of a fight).
The graphics look amazing and actually reminds me a little bit of Alien Hominid. I love the particle effects when the enemies die and just the overall effects in the game look really nice and a bit cartoony. The character design is either on the “Aww it’s so cute” side of the spectrum or on the “Holy hell what is that?! Kill it with fire!!” side. You can take a look into the designs at their website but they actually look about 20% cuter in the game, especially when they’re in their tinier Metroid-esque forms.
The music is awesome and can feel pretty epic when you’re gunning down a horde of bugs with a giant powered up laser gun. Every thing put together just makes it a really enjoyable game and you can definitely kill a lot of time with this especially if you grab a friend and play co-op. Be sure to grab this game!
The one downside are the tips in between each level. It’s the same three or four tips over and over. Yeah, I get it; get the coins before they vanish and hold down the button to shoot. I don’t remember the others cause I stopped reading them and just mashed A in between stages.
One addition I would like to see in this game would be a Zen mode: no timer, no death, just some fun killing bugs.
See you next game! -DecoyEC has logged out.
