The classic game is very much the same as Mafia wherein a small number of “Mafia” members must trick, lie and kill in cooperation against ‘townspeople’ who do not know each others identities. Chaos mode adds another layer of complexity by adding additional roles but I personally enjoy the classic version the most.
Each player is randomly given a role card with a specific goal and ability that will aid them in their objective. Mafia can only kill at night and townspeople can vote to lynch one player during the day. There are other neutral characters that do not align with either side and instead have their own objective. This includes serial killer that must kill indiscriminately and jester whose goal is to be lynched by the town.
Due to the random nature of the roles and the popularity of this game, each Town of Salem game is different. You may run into an especially vicious team of mafia or you may have a really cooperative town that works cohesively together against the evil doers.
I really love this game because of its simple nature and the camaraderie you form with people on your team. Being the Mafia is sadistically fun and requires a lot of deception and well timed remarks from you and your teammates to trick others into believing your innocence. Some of my favourite roles include jailor which gives you the ability to jail one person per night and you can choose to execute them if you find them suspicious. Another role is the medium who can talk to the dead and finally my favourite, the jester whose goal is to get the town to lynch you publicly (being killed at night doesn’t count) AND after you die you get to have your revenge by killing someone who voted you to be ‘guilty’ the night after.
Graphics are simple but they do their job. The one thing that could be improved on is the lag. Omg the lag is ridiculous sometimes and really ruins the atmosphere of the game. Sometimes the graphics don’t even work although you can technically still play without it. I am told that the steam version is much better but that costs 5$ and for the average casual player, probably isn’t work the investment.
That being said, a fantastic game and one that I highly recommend groups of friends to play together. Beware, this game tests the mettle of your friendship.
